Principles of Lower Limb Amputations - Thiel Cadaveric Course

Description:
This is a one day hands-on cadaveric course that will cover the principles of lower limb amputations (trans-tibial and trans-femoral). Thiel embalmed human cadavers will be used, giving a more realistic operating room experience. Didactic presentations on anatomy, planning, peri-operative and chronic pain management, physiotherapy and prosthetic management will be delivered by expert faculty. Half the day will be spent practicing operative skills.

Target audience:
Aimed at orthopaedic ST5-ST6 trainees, vascular ST2-ST4 trainees and SAS grades who would like to gain experience in lower limb amputations procedures. Numbers are limited to 10 delegates with 2 delegates for every operating site.

Aims and objectives:
To provide training in the principles of the commonest lower limb amputation procedures (trans-tibial and trans-femoral). Surgical techniques will be taught, practiced and evaluated.

Learning outcomes:
On completion the delegates should be able to identify the relevant anatomy, indications and principles of trans-tibial and trans-femoral amputations. They will have performed the respective surgical procedures. Participants will recognize the aspects of peri-operative and chronic pain management for amputation patients, the physiotherapy goals following these procedures and also the principles of prosthetic management. At the end of each surgical skill the participants will complete a procedural based assessment.
