This is a newly developed intensive 2 day course focusing on essential skills and safety required for safe laparoscopic and thoracoscopic procedures that can be performed in veterinary small animal minimal access surgery. The course has been carefully designed to maximise hands on experience whilst in our centre.

The course is particularly aimed at veterinary surgeons already performing laparoscopic procedures who wishes to take their skills to the next level and perform more complex procedures, but is also suitable for the veterinary surgeon starting out in minimal access surgery. This course is unique in being taught by both veterinary and human surgeons experienced in laparoscopic surgery, to allow attendees a perspective on recent developments in human surgery, and their application to veterinary patients.




Programme Includes:

  • Overview of different laparoscopic equipment, instrumentation and its selection and safe use

  • Use of advanced and new technologies, including harmonic scalpel, bipolar feedback tissue sealing, and laparoscopic stapling

  • Extracorporeal suturing, clip application and laparoscopic stapling techniques

  • Skills training on virtual reality computer trainers, laparoscopic trainers, tissue models

  • Safe laparoscopic surgery principles and techniques

  • Systematic approach to performing full diagnostic laparoscopy and thoracoscopy

  • How to avoid and manage errors and laparoscopic complications

  • A variety of intermediate procedures, including diagnostic laparoscopy, laparoscopic tissue biopsies, nephrectomy, liver lobectomy, cholecystectomy, laparoscopic ovariohysterectomy, adrenalectomy, enterotomy, enterectomy, subtotal pericardiectomy, lung biopsy, long lobectomy, vascular ring anomalys such as PRAA, chylothorax surgical management and thoracic duct ligation.
