The Thiel soft embalming technique is a sophisticated method of preservation of complete  human cadavers that allows them to maintain many features of a live body, particularly with regard to the authenticity of colour, tissue consistency and flexibility. These characteristics make a Thiel embalmed human cadaver an excellent model for skills training.

Benefits include:

  • ‘Life-like’ and realistic simulation model
  • Reduced risk of infection
  • Minimal odour
  • Negligible formalin levels
  • Longevity—bodies can be kept for 3 years
  • Reduced deterioration compared to fresh frozen cadavers

The University of Dundee is currently the leading centre in the UK using Thiel embalmed cadavers, thanks to the pioneering work of its Centre of Anatomy and Human Identification (CAHID.)  TheDIHS, already highly regarded as a quality surgical skills training facility, has developed an expansive portfolio of Thiel cadaver courses across various specialties including General Surgery,  Orthopaedics, Urology and ENT.

The Anatomy Department and DIHS are regulated by the Anatomy Act (Scotland) and Her Majesty’s Inspector of Anatomy for Scotland.  Before anyone, student or surgeon, can work with the cadavers they have to sign a form to demonstrate compliance with our regulations which safeguard the respectful treatment of the cadavers and the responsible use of this invaluable resource.

The work is overseen by the Thiel Advisory Committee which has representatives from DIHS, CAHiD (Centre for Anatomy & Human Identification) and other departments within the University of Dundee.
