EAES Laparoscopic Lower GI Surgery Course

Re-imbursement Details

Initially you will pay the full course fee £1800, KARL STORZ are kindly sponsoring this course and will reimburse half of the course fee after attending (£900).

Travel and accommodation is not reimbursed.

 
In order to obtain the funding you must agree to your contact details being forwarded to Karl Storz. Please complete the online registration form, we will then e-mail you asking for the following 3 documents, if the Course Director accepts your application we will ask you to pay the fees online.
 
1. Signed letter of recommendation from your Head of Clinic. 
2. 1 page summary of your laparoscopic surgical experience, please specify types and numbers of cases as lead surgeon and assistant and please ensure only laparoscopic experience is included. 
3. Brief 2 Page CV (you will be asked to resubmit if longer than 2 pages)
 
After attending the full 4 day EAES course, Karl Storz will reimburse PART of your course fee of £900, this will be refunded back through the Online Store to the card you originally paid with, around 2 weeks after the course has finished (This is the only way that the course fee can be refunded).  If you are an EAES member please let us know at the time of registration in order to obtain a 10% discount.
 

KARL STORZ will allow you to attend one EAES Upper Course and one EAES Lower Course only, you will not be reimbursed if you apply and attend the course again. You can only book onto one EAES Laparoscopic course within a 12 month period. 

A four-day course aimed at Lower GI surgeons and senior trainees who wish to learn more about laparoscopic approaches to the Lower GI system.

Students

Suitable attendees are surgical trainees (SPR 5-6) and consultant surgeons who have extensive experience of conventional lower GI procedures and are already undertaking routine laparoscopic cases (cholecystectomy, diag. lap., lap appendix). There will be a maximum of 20 places available on each course, with 2 courses running each year.   

Selection Criteria

Attendees who wish to book on the course should either provide a summary from their recent ARCP or CV including current surgical activity. Candidates should be at the point of commencing practice of some of the procedures to be covered in the course, with appropriate supervision/ mentorship.   

Content

This will be a practical skills course where attendees will master a variety of tissue approximation techniques.  The following laparoscopic procedures will be rehearsed in the skills laboratory: Lap suturing, Laparoscopic anatomy demonstration on cadaver, parastomal hernia, rectopexy and rectal resection.  There will also be several expert sessions covering aspects of advanced lower GI surgery involving clinicians from across Europe, with a live operative demonstration.  There will also be a revision anatomy session, to relate the relevant anatomy to procedures.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course each attendee should be able to:

  • Explain the pros and cons of laparoscopic colorectal surgery and make an informed decision about their own future practice
  • Describe the techniques for obtaining vascular control in lap. colorectal surgery
  • Debate the place of lap colorectal surgery for cancer
  • Describe the indications, methods of patient selection, patient information, risks and complications related to laparoscopic colorectal surgery
  • Form a plan for starting out in their own clinical training for lap colorectal cases
  • Outline the important anatomical considerations related to laparoscopic colectomy
  • Explain the risks inherent in use of energised dissection and means of avoiding complications related to such devices
  • Demonstrate certain key skills related to lap colorectal surgery.
  • Positioning of trocars and instruments according to basic ergonomic principles
  • Safe laparoscopic dissection techniques
  • Safe deployment of a laparoscopic stapling device
