Clinical Skills Centre
Formed in 1998, the University of Dundee Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre has been providing innovative simulation-based education to healthcare students and professionals for over twenty years. The centre has evolved over time, adapting to the changes in clinical practice and advances in technology. As well as more traditional simulators, the centre has a well-established volunteer patient bank, a large group of professional actors, augmented and virtual reality simulators, simulated ward, HDU and primary care environments and most recently an immersion room. We deliver high-quality education to both undergraduate and postgraduate learners from all healthcare backgrounds.
The Centre
The Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre has expanded over time and now consists of three linked areas. The main central area includes nine clinical teaching rooms, circling a large central seminar room. The clinical teaching rooms are flexible and can be arranged to teach a variety of skills, with two rooms set up more specifically for communication skills training. There is also a designated resuscitation training room and accommodation for staff.
Additional to these spaces, there is an area with two large flexible teaching rooms, two self-directed learning rooms, a procedural skills room and a newly installed immersion room. The final area is the Dow Clinical Simulation Suite consisting of three outpatient/community consultation rooms with a reception area, a six bedded state of the art hospital ward and a High Dependency Area. We have extensive audio-visual recording facilities throughout this area. Adjoining this is a control room and breakout rooms which allow observation and debriefing of activities taking place within any part of the Suite.
Our Community
We have a diverse team of teaching staff representing a variety of healthcare professions, as well as professional services staff. The Centre has close working relationships with NHS Tayside and other departments within the University, including the Centre for Medical Education, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design and the School of Computing.
Our volunteer simulated patients and clinical patients are an integral part of our community. They have been providing an invaluable service as volunteer members of the clinical skills team since 1997 and provide an unrivalled experience for our learners.
